As we settle into summer, there’s always an urge to mirror the changes we love to see outside in our household surroundings: out with the old, and in with the new.

In order to help you transform your home, here at Dundas we have teamed up with Scotland’s premier furniture supplier, Get Fully Furnished, to put together some quick tips and tricks for maximising your space without breaking the bank.

  • Declutter

Now is the perfect time to get your home ready for the summer! Whether you choose to undertake a ruthless clearout, or just try to tidy up the organised chaos around you, decluttering your surfaces and corners can leave you with more space than you’d ever think possible.

  • Prioritise light

Having enough light – particularly natural light – really enhances the sense of space in a room. Take advantage of the lighter evenings by maximising window space and avoiding dark corners and dim lights. Lamps can help to achieve this if your access to natural light is limited!

  • Use mirrors

Capitalise on your lighting and visually expand your space by tactically placing mirrors where they will reflect the natural light – maybe opposite a window to capture natural sunlight, or in the darkest corner of a room to open up the space.

  • Think purpose and placement

Are your household items taking up useful space? Is your furniture placement helping or hindering your spatial outlook? Could you make changes to your storage? Could a space have multiple purposes?

Asking yourself a few simple organisational questions about how you could be more space-savvy may unlock solutions for making the most of your rooms.

  • Hide wires and cables

Hiding unsightly cables and wires behind furniture, in a drawer, or by using cord covers stops a room from looking messy and neatens the space, creating a sense of openness.

  • Introduce some greenery

To really bring the spirit of summer and new growth into your home, why not use flowers or small plants to improve the quality of your indoor space? Not only will these bring some natural beauty to the room, they will also bring a lively pop of welcome colour to the space quickly and inexpensively.

  • Give a room (or house) a fresh coat of paint

One simple thing that can help freshen up your home is to give the place a fresh lick of paint. There is no greater feeling than a freshly painted home without those scuff marks that happen over time (or worse if you have kids)! A nice off-white colour works very well as a base coat throughout your home, be bold and go for a feature colour in your lounge or kitchen to give your home some identity.

Use any combination of these tips and tricks to make a massive difference to the space in your home this summer!
